ESPA CONGRESS 2022
The 12th European Congress of ESPA 2022 (Annual Meeting of the European Society for Paediatric Anaesthesiology) took place at the Centro de Congressos de Lisboa in Lisbon, Portugal, from 29 September to 1 October 2022. The European Congress of Paediatric Anaesthesiology is held annually and brings together experts from all over the world. This year, the event was held in attendance after a two-year hiatus due to travel restrictions caused by the pandemic coronavirus crisis. In 2020 and 2021, the ESPA event was held virtually only.
Our biggest challenge in organizing this event was to galvanize the ESPY community to come back to an in-person congress after two years.
We tried to make the professional programme more attractive, to involve proven social activities and at the same time to prepare innovations that will elevate the congress.
Programme: the congress included a very nice and inspiring two and a half day programme with practical workshops. The latest scientific findings were presented in the form of poster discussions, and most importantly with plenty of time for informal interaction and networking. The programme was enriched by a charity run and gala dinner on 30 September. In the early morning, a charity run took place along the waterfront to Torre de Belém. The social event, which is always held on the eve of the last day of the Congress, took place at the Monte Mar restaurant with a panoramic view of the Tagus River. We believe the participants created unforgettable memories thanks to a great dining experience and cultural program.
Innovation: The video was shown at the closing ceremony, the last day of the ESPA Congress itself.
As part of the sustainability, we created a standard congress lanyard that was returned after the congress, so it can be reused for future years of the congress. The whole team was dressed in congress t-shirts, which was very much appreciated by the participants of the ESPA event. The congress t-shirts were available for purchase at the booths at the event so that participants could own their own as a keepsake.
Despite the global pandemic, the ESPO Congress went well. The event was attended by 459 experts from 50 different countries. For being a European congress, we can boast participants from Korea, Canada, New Zealand, and other non-European countries.
